Abstract

A predictive tracking approach and a novel method for visual motion compensation are introduced, which accurately reconstruct and compensate the deformation of the elastic object, even in the case of complete measurement information loss. The core of the methods involves a probabilistic physical model of the object, from which all other mathematical models are systematically derived. Due to flexible adaptation of the models, the balance between their complexity and their accuracy is achieved.

Abstract

The behaviour of systems occurring in real life is often modelled by partial differential equations. This book investigates how a user or observer can influence the behaviour of such systems mathematically and computationally. A thorough mathematical analysis of controllability problems is combined with a detailed investigation of methods used to solve them numerically, these methods being validated by the results of numerical experiments. In Part I of the book the authors discuss the mathematics and numerics relating to the controllability of systems modelled by linear and non-linear diffusion equations; Part II is dedicated to the controllability of vibrating systems, typical ones being those modelled by linear wave equations; finally, Part III covers flow control for systems governed by the Navier-Stokes equations modelling incompressible viscous flow. The book is accessible to graduate students in applied and computational mathematics, engineering and physics; it will also be of use to more advanced practitioners.

Abstract

Xunjing Li (1935-2003) was a pioneer in control theory in China. He was known in the Chinese community of applied mathematics, and in the global community of optimal control theory of distributed parameter systems. He has made important contributions to the optimal control theory of distributed parameter systems, in particular regarding the first-order necessary conditions (Pontryagin-type maximum principle) for optimal control of nonlinear infinite-dimensional systems. He directed the Seminar of Control Theory at Fudan towards stochastic control theory in 1980s, and mathematical finance in 1

Abstract

In this work, the Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) approaches combined systematically to analyze and identify systems. The generalized Polynomial Chaos (gPC) expansion is applied to reduce the computational effort. The framework using gPC based on Bayesian UQ proposed in this work is capable of analyzing the system systematically and reducing the disagreement between the model predictions and the measurements of the real processes to fulfill user defined performance criteria.

Abstract

This book develops and details rigorous design methodologies and performance measures for the control of modern Smart Structures. The spatially distributed/continuum or distributed parameter nature of such structures makes it difficult to apply modern lumped parameter control philosophy and techniques to such designs. While there exist a substantial amount of technical literature on the Control of Distributed Parameter Systems (DPS), there are still relatively few applications or practical implementations of the theory. The work presented in this textbook address the issue of the design and implementation of distributed parameter control schemes, for Smart Structures, which exploit both spatially distributed sensing and actuation through the use of modern smart material technology. The merging of DPS with distributed parameter transducers leads to simple, physically realizable control system designs. This text provides a significant reference for practicing professionals, students and researchers in the area of transducer design using smart materials for high performance smart structures.

Abstract

This book introduces a comprehensive methodology for adaptive control design of parabolic partial differential equations with unknown functional parameters, including reaction-convection-diffusion systems ubiquitous in chemical, thermal, biomedical, aerospace, and energy systems. Andrey Smyshlyaev and Miroslav Krstic develop explicit feedback laws that do not require real-time solution of Riccati or other algebraic operator-valued equations. The book emphasizes stabilization by boundary control and using boundary sensing for unstable PDE systems with an infinite relative degree. The book also presents a rich collection of methods for system identification of PDEs, methods that employ Lyapunov, passivity, observer-based, swapping-based, gradient, and least-squares tools and parameterizations, among others. Including a wealth of stimulating ideas and providing the mathematical and control-systems background needed to follow the designs and proofs, the book will be of great use to students and researchers in mathematics, engineering, and physics. It also makes a valuable supplemental text for graduate courses on distributed parameter systems and adaptive control.

Abstract

The proposed book presents recent breakthroughs for the control of distributed parameter systems and follows on from a workshop devoted to this topic. It introduces new and unified visions of the challenging control problems raised by distributed parameter systems. The book collects contributions written by prominent international experts in the control community, addressing a wide variety of topics. It spans the full range from theoretical research to practical implementation and follows three traverse axes: emerging ideas in terms of control strategies (energy shaping, prediction-based control, numerical control, input saturation), theoretical concepts for interconnected systems (with potential non-linear actuation dynamics), advanced applications (cable-operated elevators, traffic networks), and numerical aspects. Cutting-edge experts in the field contributed in this volume, making it a valuable reference source for control practitioners, graduate students, and scientists researching practical and theoretical solutions to the challenging problems raised by distributed parameter systems.
